Weight Lifting Strap - FAQ
Are there other companies that sell weight lifting straps?
There are really only four active weight lifting strap designs being sold that are designed to be placed around a handle or bar that will help protect your wrist and hands from stress. One design is a basic weight lifting strap 18-22” long that is wrapped two to three times around the object being grabbed. This design is very time consuming to get into and very hard to adjust. The patent on this product ran out many years ago and is still being manufactured by many companies under various names. They truly are a pain to use and I would not suggest the weight lifting strap to anyone.
The next two patented designs are functioning designs, but both have some major drawbacks. Compared to Rex’s Grip weight lifting strap, both are very bulky. They both use a heavyweight polyester fabric with velcro and a buckle along with a neoprene rubber pad that you place around your wrist and secure. If you are doing an exercise that does not require the use of the strap you must move the strap out of the way using your other hand, then back again with your other hand when the strap is needed. Rex’s Grip fits very loose around the wrist and can easily swing to the back of the hand and out of the way when not needed.
What makes Rex’s Grips weight lifting strap better than the competition?
Rex’s Grips are made in America with all organic materials. The strap material is 1 ¼ “ soft cotton webbing. The material that comes in direct contact with your hands and fingers is very soft upholstery leather. Using these soft materials and the improved design make using Rex’s Grip more comfortable and very adjustable using just the fingers and hands. All these things make it much easier to control the weight being lifted with less chance of injury.
Can I wear gloves with Rex’s Grips weight lifting strap?
Yes, if you really want to. Gloves, like a well designed weight lifting strap, give you better hand and finger control. The beauty of Rex’s Grip weight lifting strap is the ability to “feel” and make adjustments with greater control. I have never used gloves myself but I have a small number of customers who do. If you want to use gloves make sure that when measuring your wrist you measure with your gloves on. Remember, to get the correct size you must measure 360 degrees around your wrist joint (metacarpal joint). The glove will increase wrist size!
Should I remove Rex’s Grip between exercises or sets?
No! I never take Rex’s Grip off once I start my strength training workout. Because they fit loosely around your wrist and hand they never are in the way of anything that you may want to do with either hand. Gravity will keep the leather gripping surface in a down position.
At any time, with Rex’s Grips weight lifting strap, you can talk on the phone, pick up an item or even drink a beer. When you are ready to start your workout again simply turn your wrist or shake your hand and the leather “V” shaped end will be in the correct position. This is all part of a learning process on “How to use Rex’s Grip weight lifting strap”.
How do I know which is the correct size?
Let me first explain there is no right or left. Both straps are identical. The only difference from one size to the next is the length of the webbing, or cotton strap material. The distance from the black elastic to the leather “V” is all the same. The elastic is there for only one reason; it keeps the loose fitting strap near you hand so it doesn’t slide down your forearm. Once you get used to the strap you will see the advantage of the elastic.
To measure your wrist use a flexible paper or tailor tape measure. Measure 360 degrees around your wrist joint (metacarpal joint). Snug up the tape measure to get a very accurate measurement. Don’t over tighten or compress the skin.
Sizing Chart for weight lifting strap (wrist measurement)
- Small – 6 1/2’’ or less
- Medium – 6 5/8’’ to 7 3/8’’
- Large – 7 1/2’’ to 8 3/8’’
- X-Large – 8 1/2’’ or larger
Note: If you use gloves and really want to continue to use them , measure around your wrist joint with the glove on and order accordingly. Gloves really are not needed. Rex’s Grip weight lifting straps covers most of your palm and fingers that come in contact with the equipment being used.
What exercises do you recommend or use when you workout?
I will leave that up to your personal trainer or the thousands of books that are out there on strength training. I personally do a lot of pushing and pulling exercises, the reason is I want to get as much done in the shortest period of time. For your upper body alternating a push and a pull will allow one muscle group to rest while you are working a different muscle group. I also do legs and arms the same day for the same reason. Dumbbells, for example, can be used for all muscle groups of the body. Most of the time you can use the same weight for all your muscle groups without putting the dumbbell down.
What about the Fit? How can I tell I have the right size or if I am adjusting them too tight or loose?
Make sure that you use the size chart to get the correct size. I am 5’10” tall and weigh about #175 with a 7 1/8 “ wrist. I take the size medium. I could use the size small or the size large but the size M is just right. Remember Rex’s Grip does not fit tightly around the wrist when not in use, the adjustment of the strap is all done with your hand and fingers and the object being grabbed. Rex’s Grip, when used, should be positioned on the back of the hand below the wrist joint.
This will greatly speed up your workout!
Should I clean my Rex’s Grip weight lifting strap?
If they start to have an odor you might rinse them out once a year or so. Allow them to dry when they get wet from either water or perspiration.
Over a short period of time your Rex’s Grip will start to look like you have used them. The longer you use them the better they feel and the better they work. Over the years I have made a number of prototypes that I have given to people working out. When I offered these same people a new set in return for their old ones, they did not want to give the old ones back. They said they worked so well and they had an attachment to them. True story! You can tell by the photo, that these straps have stories to tell! Don’t worry about what they look like as long as they still work. Just make sure that you tell someone else about Rex’s Grip weight lifting strap.
